Skip The Skim! Are You Making The Best Dairy Choices?

I have been following low-carb regimens for decades with varying levels of success until I discovered that my fat intake was actually too low. Of course, other factors would improve results, like time-restricted eating and exercise, but I wasn't getting the results I wanted until I drastically increased fat intake. Yes, you heard that right. Within days, I started dropping weight and feeling better. Within a little over a month, my cholesterol had improved, and liver enzymes that had previously indicated a fatty liver had fallen significantly. At that point, I began 'my awakening' about the low-fat food industry.

In the post, Full-Fat Dairy Is Good for Your Heart, the author points out how a particular myth of the low fat industry is that full-fat dairy will clog arteries and cause heart disease.

In contrast, here are just a few benefits of full-fat dairy!

  • Better Immune Support - Higher concentrations of Vitamins A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, & Omega-3
  • Blood Sugar/Insulin - Lowered glycemic response due to a more favorable ratio between milk sugar (lactose)/protein/fat content
  • Better Tasting!

Citing a new major study out of Johns Hopkins, INH Research argues that the mainstream medical establishment has promoted a decades-old false narrative about the relationship between dairy fat, heart disease, and cholesterol. Now, there is strong evidence that dairy fat actually protects you from cardiovascular disease. Read the full article here.

When it comes to healthier dairy choices, here are some golden rules:

  • Full-Fat is Best
  • Choose Organic - pasture-raised cows are free of growth hormones, pesticides, and other toxins; they also have a higher level of Omega-3's and beneficial dairy fatty acids.
  • Islandic or Greek Yogurts are typically higher in probiotics, lower in sugar, and have more protein.
  • Never buy processed cheeses!
